The 4th Industrial Revolution

The 4th Industrial Revolution, also known as "Industry 4.0", is a term used to refer to the integration of digital technologies like AI, IoT and robotics into manufacturing (MentalUP, 2021).

Education 4.0

Industry 4.0 is transforming education into "Education 4.0", shifting focus towards digital skills, AI-driven personalisation, and flexible learning to prepare students for a technology-driven workforce. It emphasises interdisciplinary, project-based learning and the use of technologies like VR/AR for immersive education, replacing traditional, rigid curriculums.

Information System Failure

Information systems enable new digital technologies which can transform education, but they can also fail and cause a significant impact.

One example is the Vice Society cybergang ransomware attack on the Los Angeles Unified School District in September 2022 (Wired, 2022).

The school district stored many gigabytes of personal information, but the security of their information system failed, and the Vice Society cybergang was able to encrypt critical systems and steal 500 gigabytes of personal data, including social security numbers, financial and tax information, health details, and legal records.

Vice Society threatened to release the data publicly unless the school distict paid a ransom. The school district refused to pay, so the data was released 3 days later.

The school district announced what happened to the school community, and set up a support hotline.

Impact of System Failure

The ransomware attack had a significant impact in many ways.

After the school district recovered from the attack, they implemented better security - effective virus protection and a multi-factor authentication policy. They also gave staff digital resilience training - how to be more vigilant to keep the system secure and respond to possible threats.

Information and technology systems can potentially enable more personalised and flexible education. Moraes et al., 2023 argue that, "The technologies of Industry 4.0 support the entire learning process, but they are not used as much as they should. They are still largely restricted to universities and courses related to manufacturing." It is also important to recognise that unequal access to digital tools, resources or infrastructure requirements risk potentially exacerbating existing inequalities (World Economic Forum, 2022).

Industry 4.0 can transform education at all levels for all learners in all countries, but schools and school districts need to ensure their systems are implemented with consistently strong security, so their students can safely benefit from the enormous potential of Industry 4.0 technology. Schools and school districts also need to move to a more balanced Industry 5.0 approach, which means reintegrating human ingenuity with advanced technology, to cultivate a human-centric, sustainable, and resilient production approach.
